1st Day of Media Deprivation

My first day of media deprivation started off with me not even remembering the rules because I was jumping out of bed to get ready for work. It wasn't until I was halfway on my way to work when I realized, "OH, I'm not supposed to be listening to the radio!" and from there on I chose to abide by the rules of the project... for the most part. Since I worked from the morning until 6 at night, I was fortunately around music and TVs for most for most of the day that were unavoidable so that could have kept me somewhat sane throughout this weekend. The drive home was pretty awkward because I was just staring at the car's license plates in front of me most of the drive instead of jamming out to my Cd's or listening to the radio. That was definitely one of the most difficult parts of Day 1- not being able to listen to the radio. I realized how heavily I rely on it to keep me company while I'm driving, and also while I'm getting ready to go places I almost always have my TV set on a channel with music videos. When I got home from work I had to use my phone to text(who calls people anymore??!) because I was checking with my friends what the plans were for that night, which inevitably lead me onto Facebook. I was logged in for a few minutes before realizing that I was breaking the rules, so I quickly signed out and went back to my phone to see if my friends had responded. Luckily they had, and I knew what my plans were for the night. My Saturday night started off with another awkward and silent drive, yet this time to the Palladium to see a Nightmare on Elm Street. That movie was verging on embarrassing and I couldn't believe how much of a let down it was.... *sigh* oh well, I shouldn't have had expectations for it in the first place. Back to the project, it was still nice to go out to the movies and get some sort of entertainment that I'm used to during my weekends. I forgot to mention though, that I got there about 10 minutes before my friends and waited on a bench outside the theater and, like most people with a cell phone, started web surfing. Good thing I caught myself before I could post a FB status, but I again realized the impact of mass media in my life. Whenever I'm bored I quickly turn to my phone for web surfing and texting, and since my cell phone is with me 24/7 it's a difficult habit to break because it's so accessible. After the movies I went to a party with some friends, which was another loophole I took advantage of because of the blasting music and TV on throughout the whole night. Although I only glimpsed at the TV, I definitely was glad to be hearing some good music after those monotonous drives in my car. As the first day of the media deprivation project came to a close, I knew that I tried pretty hard to avoid the mass media yet messed up a few times. But then again, that's the whole point of the project isn't it?

  1. Yeah, the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake was such a bore. I mainly saw it to get out of the house (and to confirm my sneaking suspicions that it was going to suck), so I knew going in that it wasn't going to be any good.

As much as I loathe all these Horror remakes (I'm a HUGE horror geek), I do make the effort to watch them when they come out, mostly out of morbid curiosity. And I've yet to see a good Horror remake, let alone one that measures up to the original.

I'll get off my soapbox now. :D
