As the hours drew closer and closer to the moment I fell asleep on Friday night, I knew that when I woke up the media depravation project had to be started the next day. In my head I knew that it would be a tough one because of how much I use my phone, internet, listen to music, and watch TV. The one thing that helped me with enduring the restrictions of this project was work. I woke up on the first day of the project feeling a little worried on how weird the day was going to be. I reached to grab the remote to turn on the TV when I caught myself. I realized my daily routine with most of the media in my life was going to be messed up with this project. The many hours between the times I woke up until the time I went into work was a very quiet one. I ate my breakfast in an awkward silence due to the fact that neither the TV nor music was playing. For my mind to stay relaxed and not worry about some things I have to occupy it by staying busy by watching a movie, watching TV, listening to music, or playing video games. The problem with that day was I could not do any of that. The silence carried on until work that day when the drive there became incredibly boring. It seemed as if the commute was longer due to the fact that there was no music to occupy my mind. As I got to my work everything was back to normal. At work I would sneak peeks at the NBA game of the night because I knew I couldn’t watch it at home. My phone would notify me when it got text messages but I had to keep my promise to my class and only answer if it was important. It would have been a lot easier on me if I kept my phone in the car that day. Going to work made it easier to cope with this media depravation project because it kept me busy so that I did not have to turn on the TV or go on the internet. The first day of the project did not seem too bad for me. Work was a big factor and it made it easy in helping me stay distracted.

It's funny how this project makes you actually WANT to go to work, huh? Just goes to show how pervasive all these forms of mass media are in our daily lives, and how subservient we are to them.
ReplyDeleteHey, I feel you on the NBA temptation. Thank god the Spurs wrapped up the series with the Mavs before Saturday!
